Are you adapting to survive or are you adapting to succeed?

We live in a VUCA world. One that’s characterized by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. And one that will test most of us and provide enough opportunities to ‘adapt’.

And the question we need to ask is are we adapting to survive or to succeed?

Marshal Goldsmith says ” In analyzing our relationship to our work, consciously or not, we run everything through two filters: short-term satisfaction — happiness — and long-term benefit — meaning. Both have value.”

Marshal defines surviving as activities that are low on short-term satisfaction and low on long-term benefit — stuff that we do to get by. He goes on to define succeeding as activities that are high on both short-term satisfaction and long-term benefits.

So, in today’s VUCA  world, are you surviving or succeeding? One is all all getting through hurdles and fences. The other is all about flapping your wings and flying,
